So, after 35 years of work, each year you continue to work at a high salary nullifies a year spent at a lower salary.

South Carolina law enforcement officials have started issuing tickets for traveling in the left or passing lane. If you are not overtaking or passing another slower vehicle, you must travel in the right lane otherwise known as the travel lane.

Have you ever been in a long line of slower traffic on the interstate because one vehicle ahead is traveling slow in the passing lane? This enforcement is meant to keep this from happening. When these lines form it is a haven for accidents.

The move right law otherwise known as the Stay Right Law is actually already in place in most states. If not already a law in most states, it is recommended safe driving.

The state has started putting up signs to remind drivers of the law. The signs are like these:

This law is different than the Move Over Law . The Move Over or Reduce Speed Law is when approaching emergency vehicles and law enforcement with flashing lights on the side of the road. Help keep or first responders, fire department personnel, police, state troopers, county sheriff, tow truck drivers and other roadside assistance maintenance workers safe by moving over to the left or reducing speed.

REAL ID DEADLINE IS LESS THAN ONE YEAR AWAY

Yes, even Elvis would be required to get the Real ID. Even though wait times at the DMV have improved, the last thing a person wants to do is spend time at the DMV. South Carolinians must have a REAL ID in less than one year. If you do not have a real ID you will not be allowed to: board a domestic, or commercial flight. You will not be able to enter a secure federal building, or visit a military installation unless they have another form of federally approved identification.

The Real ID Deadline is drawing near. Beginning May 3, 2023, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will require federally approved identification. A REAL ID driver’s license or identification card, is needed to board a flight within the United States or access certain federal facilities. Other federally approved forms of identification include a valid passport or military identification card. You must still have a valid US Passport or Passport Card to travel internationally.

The implementation has been talked about for several years. Go now to the DMV and make the switch to a REAL ID credential. The longer people wait, the more demand it will put on the SC DMC=V branch offices. That means longer wait times. Customers can spend significantly less time at the DMV to get a REAL ID if they first see if they’re eligible to do it online. If you are eligible, it saves you a trip to a DMV office. If you’re not eligible for upgrading online, we highly recommend coming in this summer to get a REAL ID.”

The SCDMV has issued more than two million REAL ID driver’s licenses and identification cards. The agency issues an average of more than 43,000 REAL ID compliant cards per month.

Don’t let the Real ID deadline slip by. Changing your current license or identification card to a REAL ID works the same as renewing your card. Visit an SCDMV branch office with your social security number and all of the following required documents:

Customers must complete a vision screening or vision examination to obtain or renew a driver’s license or beginner’s permit. Vision screens can be performed in any SCDMV branch at the time of application. In-state licensed eye care professionals can also electronically upload vision examinations to the SCDMV online.

Customers may also be eligible to purchase a REAL ID online if they have the proper supporting documents on file with the SCDMV. Customers can complete a document check online and find out if they are eligible for online purchase by visiting:

That’s how most people think of renter’s coverage: protection for stuff, and nothing more. After all, it’s inexpensive and it doesn’t even cover the structure itself. So how important can it be, especially if you don’t think you have anything valuable to protect?

Plenty important, because you have more to protect than you realize. You just have to stop thinking only about “stuff.” Here are three key financial protections a renters policy provides:

Loss of use coverage. What would you do if a fire or other issue forced you out of your home? You’d have to find a temporary place to stay, maybe even for months — which might cost you more than your normal rent. Loss of use helps cover that and other additional expenses.

Personal liability protection. If someone trips and injures themselves in your unit, they could sue you. If your dog bites one of your guests, they might file suit, too. Yes, lawsuits happen — even among friends. Renters insurance can help cover legal expenses and even judgments against you. Did you see that motorcycle? Motorcycles can be hard to see. Spring is here, which means you’ll likely see more motorcycles on the road. And the key word here is “see.” People driving cars and trucks often fail to notice the motorcyclists around them, partly because they’re not accustomed to looking for them.

Motorcycle Visibility

It’s obvious yet bears repeating: Motorcyclists are much more vulnerable than car and truck drivers and passengers. Not only are there many more cars and trucks on the road, but there’s no such thing as a “fender bender” for a motorcyclist. Even a low-speed collision can seriously injure a rider, not to mention total the bike, so it’s important to always give motorcycles extra space and an extra look.

Did you see that motorcycle? Below are six tips to help you safely share the road with motorcyclists.

Objects in mirror. The object in your mirror may be closer than it appears — especially if it’s a motorcycle. Due to its size, it can be harder to determine how close a motorcycle is and how fast it’s moving. When turning into traffic, always estimate a bike to be closer than it appears to avoid forcing a rider to quickly hit the brakes — or worse.

Watch those left turns. One of the most common motorcycle accidents involves motorcycle visibility and a car making a left turn directly in front of a bike at an intersection. Give yourself an extra moment to look specifically for motorcycles coming toward you when turning into traffic.

Double-check your blind spot. Carefully checking your blind spot and motorcycle visibility before changing lanes is always a good idea. When it comes to motorcycles, it’s critical. A bike can be easily obscured in the blind spot, hidden behind your car’s roof pillars, or blend in with cars in other lanes, so make a habit of checking carefully before changing lanes. Plus, always use your turn signal. Motorcycle visibility – Look Twice.

Don’t tailgate. This is another general rule for all drivers, but it’s especially important when following a motorcycle. Be aware that many riders decrease speed by downshifting or easing off the throttle, so you won’t see any brake lights even though they are slowing down. Following at least three seconds behind the bike should give you enough time and space to safely slow down or stop when necessary.

Stay in your lane. Obviously, motorcycles don’t take up an entire lane the way cars or trucks do. But that doesn’t mean you can cozy up and share a lane with a bike. Just because the rider may be hugging one side of the lane doesn’t mean you can move into that space. Riders are likely doing this to avoid debris, oil on the road, or a pothole, so a bit of mild swerving within the lane can be expected. Do not crowd into the lane with a bike.

Think about motorcycles. Making a habit of always checking for bikes when you drive will make the above tips second nature and make you a better driver. To personalize it, think about your friends and family members who ride bikes and then drive as if they are on the road with you. Motorcycle visibility? How many times has the following happened to you? You’re speeding down I85 when you spot a South Carolina state highway patrol car. You quickly hit the brakes and slow down, relieved that you didn’t get caught … this time.

Now take a minute to think what could have happened if you hadn’t been so lucky.

First, your speeding could have hurt somebody — or yourself. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, speed is a contributing factor in more than 30% of fatal crashes and nearly 20% of non-injury accidents. That’s a big risk to take.

Second, getting a ticket could put a big hit on your wallet. Of course, that’s not nearly as important as the health and safety impacts of speeding, but in this economic climate, more and more people are watching every dime. And who wants to write a check to the state for speeding?

How a ticket impacts your insurance

If you get a speeding ticket, that violation can stay on your driving record for three years or even longer. Your driving history plays a large part in determining how much you’ll pay for insurance. The fewer tickets you have, the better.

Different carriers have different policies when it comes to checking your driving record and dealing with drivers who have violations. If you receive a ticket, and it’s your first in several years, you may not see much of an increase — depending on the severity of the offense. In fact, many states will allow you to enter a deferment program if it’s your first ticket, keeping the violation off your record if you complete a safety course and avoid further tickets.

But that second ticket (or third, or fourth …) can bring some serious financial penalties. While there are too many variables to say specifically how much each additional violation will increase your premium, it’s safe to say that the jump will be significant. And unfortunately, you can be stuck paying those higher premiums for years.

Significant violations can have a bigger impact as well. If you’re going 20 miles per hour over the limit, you’ll likely pay more than someone with a ticket for 5 mph over. Insurance companies know that speeding increases the risk of accidents, and they’ll view you as an increased risk — for good reason. In fact, if you have a serious violation, or too many tickets, your insurance carrier could drop your coverage altogether.

For younger drivers (typically under the age of 25), it’s especially important to avoid tickets, because companies already view these drivers as riskier than the general population.

And keep in mind, even if your premium doesn’t go up, having a violation on your record could prevent you from receiving the lowest possible rate on your insurance.

Of course, we think the best policy is simply to obey speed limits. Not only will you avoid tickets and possible insurance hassles, but your risk of accidents will decrease. And you’ll get better gas mileage. Sounds like a good deal to us!

We know it can be overwhelming to think about the details involved with full-time RV living. It’s your choice to welcome the open road that may seem impulsive to others. That’s okay. Life is short, and who knows … you may end up regretting not doing this sooner!

Here are some tips to help you prepare for full-time RV living.

Become a Minimalist.

Adapting a minimalist lifestyle often requires major changes. You’re probably going from a normal-sized home to a roughly 270 square foot space. This forces you to ask: “What do I really need?” To determine this, start by writing down everything you want to bring. Then write another list of everything you actually need. This will help you visualize and prioritize your items.

Bring all the necessities, of course – clothes, toiletries, shoes, cookware, etc. However, you won’t need 10 pairs of boots. Nor do you need the many t-shirts that have been sitting in your drawers for 2+ years. What about the 20 drinking glasses that you currently have in your kitchen, probably not? Remember, this is full-time RV living.

You may need to make some tough decisions, but take this opportunity to de-clutter your belongings. Make a “take” pile and a “donation” pile. It’s always a good idea, even if you aren’t planning for full-time RV living!

Go Paperless.

Life on the road means you won’t be home to pick up your mail and see if you received any bills. Move all of your bills (cell phone, medical, credit cards, auto insurance, etc.) to automated billing. Once you make the switch, you should get all notifications for your bills via email moving forward. Plus, this helps save the environment!

Sell or Keep Your Home?

This brings us to our next question – will you make the commitment to sell your home and have your RV be your only residence? This depends on how much you plan to travel throughout the year. Also, can you afford to keep your home while traveling? You will still have your mortgage payments, maintenance on the home and other obligations. If you decide to keep your home, there’s always the option of renting it out so you won’t have to worry about any mortgage payments. If you don’t start renting, make sure you have someone regularly stopping by your home to get the mail and take care of any maintenance needed as the seasons go by.

For full-time RV living, if you do decide to sell your home or cancel a lease, you will need to choose a domicile state and receive mail. Getting a domicile means you are choosing a state for your legal residence. This state will be listed on your driver’s license. Also, where you purchase your health insurance. And where you can vote and where you will accept mail. (There are lots of mail-forwarding services that will set you up with a street address so you can officially establish residency. This is helpful because a P.O. Box address will not be accepted as your legal residence). Heavy Rain? Be on the Lookout for Heavy Rain Damage

Your home protects you from the elements. Heavy rains can weaken that protection. With a little maintenance and a lot of vigilance, it’s not hard to stay safe and dry and protect from heavy rain damage.

Spring rainstorms are a fact of life in many areas of the country. They help keep things green, even if they keep you inside. But when they get heavy, look at the potential impact all that water has on your home. The first step is finding and fixing any immediate problems soon. Take measures to prevent those problems from happening during the next downpour!

Where is all that rain going?
Your roof and gutters form a key line of defense for your home. In a storm, they’re vulnerable, because so many things can damage them. Trees, hail, and other objects can create weaknesses that lead to leaks in your roof. Check for missing shingles and other issues. And keep your gutters clear so all that water drains properly to prevent heavy rain damage.

Are you checking everywhere?
Water dripping from the ceiling is hard to miss. Water in your crawl space, however, can easily go undetected because hardly anyone ever checks there. Don’t forget to look down there after a storm for heavy rain damage to make sure everything is nice and dry. If you do see moisture, you’ll want to get it out with a sump pump as soon as possible. And don’t forget, during heavy rain, to keep storm drains clear of leaves and other debris. This can prevent flooding both on the streets and your own property.

What should you do during the storm?
During powerful storms, stay inside. This is not the time to check your roof or your exterior of your property. If there’s an emergency wait until you know it’s safe to go out. Monitor your interior, making sure no water is getting in. If it is, do what you can to alleviate the situation in the moment. Even if it means just placing something under a leak to collect the water. For more serious problems, though, remember that safety is the most important thing. If your basement is flooding, for example, don’t go down there. You could be trapped and even drown.

Thankfully, powerful storms only hit once in a while. Preparing for them, however, should be on your mind a lot more frequently. The next one could be tomorrow.

You don’t need a separate policy to insure your engagement ring or other precious items. You just need to ensure you have the right personal property coverage from your homeowners, condo, or renters insurance.

Engagement ring insurance and jewelry coverage helps protect your investment. It helps you replace them if you experience a loss that’s covered by your policy. Know What Your Existing Insurance Policy Covers

You may already have personal property coverage as part of a homeowners, renters, or condo policy. With limitations, you’re likely to already have some engagement ring insurance. Check your policy or schedule a review with a local agent to better understand what kind of jewelry coverage you have.

Calculate the Value of Your Jewelry Collection in Today’s Dollars

To determine whether you have enough engagement ring insurance, find out how much it is worth. Keep in mind that your pieces may be worth more now than when you bought them. The value of precious metals and precious stones can increase over time, so have your pieces appraised about every three years. When jewelry is scheduled the jewelry insurance coverage may require appraisals every 2 or 3 years. This is an added expense.

Use these appraisals, as well as receipts for recently purchased items, to add up the value of your collection. Then compare it to how much jewelry replacement coverage you have on your homeowners, condo or renters insurance.

Decide Which Items Require Additional Coverage

If the engagement ring insurance or jewelry insurance on your policy is lower than the value of your collection, you’ll likely want to purchase additional coverage. For example, you may have a $2,000 pair of diamond earrings, a $7,500 engagement ring and an insurance policy that covers jewelry loss – no matter how many pieces – at $3,000. If both pieces are lost in a single incident, you’re short $6,500 of coverage.

To fill this gap, you can insure high-value items individually, as part of your homeowners, condo or renters insurance. This is known as “scheduling valuables” or adding a “rider” or “endorsement” to your policy. To do so, you will likely need a recent receipt or appraisal establishing the value of each item. Scheduling jewelry and other valuable items will cost extra. Selecting the engagement ring insurance is your choice. It depends on how much you want to pay for the coverage you will be provided.

Once scheduled, if an item is damaged or lost in a covered incident, you’ll be covered for the full scheduled amount. Typically, scheduling an item also gives you broader coverage. A lost stone that isn’t covered under your homeowners policy, for example, is likely covered under a policy rider like scheduled jewelry.

Catalog Your Jewelry in a Home Inventory

Once you arrange for your high-value jewelry and/or engagement ring insurance, it’s important to create a home inventory. If you have a home inventory already, update one to catalog your valuable belongings. This isn’t as important for your scheduled pieces because your insurance company has a record of their value. However, for any unscheduled pieces that are lost or stolen, you’ll want a record of their worth.

Ideally, your home inventory will include photos, receipts, appraisals, descriptions, brand names, etc. of all valuable personal property, not just your jewelry. That way, if there’s a loss, you’ll already have the documentation needed for a personal property claim in place.

A home inventory can be as simple as a Word document (save it to the cloud or a flash drive in case your computer is damaged or stolen). Or use a Web program or mobile phone app, such as the home inventory app, to help you catalog your belongings.

Jewelry insurance coverage is easy and affordable, so talk to an agent or carrier. You may pay as little as $10 a year for each $1,000 of coverage. So, if you get something special for Valentine’s Day this year, in addition to flashing it to your friends, think about protecting it, too.

Boating Safety: With summer upon us, prime boating season is upon us. And you might notice more people on the water than ever, because sales of recreational boats have been growing at a steady clip for seven consecutive years now, according to the National Marine Manufacturers Association.

Fortunately, the number of boating accidents isn’t growing at the same pace—in fact, they are decreasing. In 2017, the most recent year for which statistics are available, accidents were down nearly 4% versus 2016; fatalities dropped by more than 6%, and injuries by over 9%.

That’s great news, but in order to make sure those numbers keep moving in the right direction, boaters need to keep making safety a priority. We’re here to help. We’ve compiled some tips for anyone who’s about to climb aboard.

Boating Safety includes choosing the right types (and sizes) of life jackets—and make sure everyone wears them.

There are different types of life jackets for various activities, such as vest-type jackets for calm, inland waters, offshore jackets with additional buoyancy designed for rougher water, and even some made for waterskiing, kayaking, etc. Think about what you’ll be doing, where you’ll be headed, and who will be with you, so you have the ones you need. Very important with boating safety each individual on board (even pets) should have a life jacket that fits properly, and most important, they should wear it at all times—there probably won’t be time to throw one on when something bad happens unexpectedly. According to the Coast Guard, in most cases of boating-related drowning, life jackets were on board but they weren’t worn by victims.

Make sure you have other key safety equipment on board.

There are plenty of other items you should have (or consider having) on your boat to increase safety. Fire extinguishers are required on most boats, even small vessels, so make sure you have the right type and that you know how to use it. If you have an enclosed area on your boat, you should install a carbon-monoxide detector.

Cell phones don’t always work well when you’re out on the water, so a VHF radio can ensure you’re able to call for help—it might be a good idea to get an emergency position-indicating radio beacon in case you get lost, too. And finally, you should always carry an anchor and signal lights, even if you aren’t planning on being out at night.

Use common sense, both before and after you launch the boat.

Keeping your boat’s systems and equipment (including safety gear, of course) in good shape is the first step to preventing problems, so put in the time to perform inspections and maintenance tasks as needed. Then, before any trip, no matter how quick, check the weather. Look for wind and small-craft advisories in particular.

Every reason why you treasure a piece of fine jewelry is a reason why it should be insured.

However, calling it “jewelry insurance” may be a stretch. You don’t need a separate policy to insure your jewelry. You just need to ensure you have the right personal property coverage from your homeowners, condo, or renters insurance.

Jewelry Insurance Coverage

Jewelry insurance coverage helps protect the investment you’ve made in your favorite pieces by helping you replace them if you experience a loss that’s covered by your policy. But, the coverage is only for certain instances and set dollar amounts, so double check what coverage you have and learn more about insuring jewelry below.

Know What Your Existing Insurance Policy Covers

If you already have personal property coverage as part of a homeowners, renters, or condo policy, you likely already have some form of protection for your jewelry. The typical insurance policy will cover you, up to your policy limit, for jewelry that’s stolen or damaged in certain incidents, such as a fire at your home. However, the typical policy will not cover everyday damage, such as a stone falling out of its setting.

In addition to knowing when you’re covered and when you’re not, it’s also important to know how much jewelry insurance coverage you have. Your insurance policy may cover each individual piece of jewelry at a set amount, such as $1,000 per piece. Or, it may cover your jewelry collection as a whole, such as $3,000 for all pieces. Check your policy or schedule an insurance review with a local agent to better understand what kind of jewelry coverage you have.

Calculate the Value of Your Jewelry Collection in Today’s Dollars

To determine whether you have enough jewelry insurance, you need to know how much your pieces are worth. Keep in mind that your pieces may be worth more now than when you bought them. The value of precious metals and precious stones can increase over time, so have your pieces appraised about every three years.

Decide Which Items Require Additional Coverage

If the jewelry coverage on your policy is lower than the value of your collection, you’ll likely want to purchase additional coverage. For example, you may have a $2,000 pair of diamond earrings, a $7,500 engagement ring and an insurance policy that covers jewelry loss – no matter how many pieces – at $3,000. If both pieces are lost in a single incident, you’re short $6,500 of coverage.

To fill this gap, you can insure high-value items individually, as part of your homeowners insurance, condo insurance or renters insurance. This is known as “scheduling valuables” or adding a “rider” or “endorsement” to your policy. To do so, you will likely need a recent receipt or appraisal establishing the value of each item.

Once scheduled, if an item is damaged or lost in a covered incident, you’ll be covered for the full scheduled amount. Typically, scheduling an item also gives you broader coverage. A lost stone that isn’t covered under your homeowners policy, for example, is likely covered under a policy rider.

Catalog Your Jewelry in a Home Inventory

Once you arrange coverage for your high-value jewelry, it’s important to create a home inventory or update an existing one to catalog your valuable belongings. This isn’t as important for your scheduled pieces because your insurance company has a record of their value. However, for any unscheduled pieces that are lost or stolen, you’ll want a record of their worth.

Jewelry insurance coverage is easy and affordable, so talk to an agent. You may pay as little as $10 a year for each $1,000 of coverage. So, if you get something special for Valentine’s Day this year, in addition to flashing it to your friends, think about protecting it, too.

Most people have an idea of what’s covered and not covered under their various insurance policies. But at Select Source Insurance, we get a lot of questions about borrowing or loaning a car.

Am I covered? What are some of the reason’s you may loan your vehicle to a friend or borrow someone elses car? You might be looking to borrow your neighbor’s truck for a home-improvement project or a trip to the local landfill. Is your car in the shop? If that is the case here is little more information.

Generally, insurance coverage follows the vehicle rather than the driver. So in most instances, as long as the owner of the car has insurance, it’s covered even if someone other than the owner is driving it — as long as they have the owner’s permission.

The borrower’s insurance is considered secondary, meaning that in the event of an accident, it could apply if the owner’s insurance is insufficient to fully cover the damage.

It’s important to note that there are some exceptions to what is called “permissive use” coverage. For example, permission must be given by the owner, unless the borrower has a reasonable belief that they are allowed to use the car. However, the borrower cannot give permission to someone else. So if your teenager allows one of his or her friends to drive your car to Starbucks, your coverage likely won’t apply.

Coverage might also be denied if the borrower operates the vehicle in a negligent or criminal manner. And if the borrower is using your car for business purposes, your personal auto policy likely won’t cover that.

If you have a regular long-term arrangement to either borrow or lend a car, the borrower should probably be added to the owner’s personal auto policy. Those who don’t own a car, but often borrow one, might also consider “named non-owner coverage,” an endorsement that provides bodily injury and property damage liability, uninsured motorists coverage and more.

Most travelers, facing that question from the rental representative, have the vague notion that they don’t really need to buy rental car insurance – which somehow is covered already. With just enough doubt in their minds, and the need to make a quick decision, perhaps they buy it just to be safe.
So, which is it?

Do I need to buy rental car insurance?

Truth be told, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer. However, you can likely reach a conclusion you’re comfortable with by considering these three questions.

1. What Types of Rental Car Insurance Are Available?

Typically, car rental agencies will offer you four types of insurance to purchase:

2. What Rental Car Coverage Might I Already Have?

Start with your personal auto insurance. It’s likely that your policy will provide the same level of coverage for your rental as it does for your own car. That usually includes liability insurance, and, depending on the policy you purchased, may include collision, comprehensive and medical payments, too. There are exclusions, however. Some insurers won’t cover rentals in a foreign country, or rentals that are being used for business. Get in touch with your independent insurance agent to verify your coverages.
Next there’s your credit card. Most cards offer some degree of coverage, but it varies widely. For coverage to apply, most cards require that you decline the rental company’s collision damage waiver and pay for the car in full with the card that provides the protection. Again, contact your card company to find out exactly what is covered.
Then, consider your health and life insurance, too. If you’re in an accident involving a rental car and you have these policies, you likely have coverage for your own costs. Plus, with your homeowners insurance, you may have personal property coverage to help repair or replace valuable belongings that are lost, damaged or stolen while you’re in a rental. Your deductible and policy limits will apply, and the same goes for renters insurance or condo insurance.

3. What Rental Coverage Might I Be Missing?

In the event something does happen to the rental car, you may be looking at loss of use and diminished value fees, and your regular policy may not cover them. Loss of use is the income that the rental agency loses due to the vehicle being in the shop for repairs, and diminished value is the calculated reduction in a vehicle’s resale value as the result of an accident. Credit cards sometimes cover these, but be aware that they may require documentation that rental agencies can be reluctant to provide.

Prepare your car for winter

Before leaving on your trip in South Carolina, give your car a thorough check-up. Do wipers need to be replaced? Are your fluid levels where they should be? Your tires need to be in good shape for driving on wet or snowy roads, and be sure your radiator and cooling systems are up to snuff. And – we know you’ve heard this before, but bear with us – your car should have an emergency kit. Pack it with jumper cables, blankets, a first-aid kit, flares, foodand water, a flashlight and other safety gear. A shovel and cat litter or sand (to provide traction should you get stuck in snow or ice) are good ideas as well.

Before you leave

Know exactly where you’re going, with printed maps, and check weather conditions along your planned route. Let someone know your itinerary, so if you don’t arrive on time, officials know where to look for you. If your car has snow or ice on it, make sure it is completely cleared off before you depart. Don’t forget to clear your headlights and other lights, along with the roof – ice and snow blowing from your car could create a hazard for other drivers.

When you’re on the road

Are roads snowy or icy? Take it slow. Take it slow. Take it slow. Sorry for repeating ourselves, but it’s absolutely vital to, yes, take it slow. Give yourself extra time to get to your destination, and make sure you leave extra room between your vehicle and others on the road. Watch for ice patches on bridges, overpasses and shady spots. Remember, having four-wheel or all-wheel drive does not mean your car will stop or steer better on ice.

If you’re caught in a storm that seems like it’s too much for you to handle, seek refuge as soon as you can. Of course, sometimes it’s best not to drive in snow and ice at all – stay home if you can.

If your vehicle becomes disabled

Nobody wants to think about being stranded on the side of the road in a storm, but it happens to thousands of people every year. If your vehicle is disabled, be sure to stay with it. Run your engine and heater for short intervals, and open one of your windows slightly to prevent carbon monoxide build-up. Light two flares (remember that vehicle emergency kit? Now’s the time to use it) and place one a safe distance from both the front and rear of your vehicle. Note your location with mileposts, exit numbers or cross-streets and call the authorities or a tow truck.

Since ride-sharing drivers use their vehicles for both business and personal purposes, the ride-sharing services have to clarify when drivers are covered by different types of insurance.

When a driver is not accepting rides, his or her personal auto insurance is the primary coverage. When the driver turns the app on, but has not yet accepted a ride, ride-sharing services generally offer contingent liability coverage if the driver’s personal auto insurance does not offer protection. When a passenger is picked up, the service’s policy is the primary policy until the end of the ride.

Unlike taxis, which are regulated on a city-by-city basis and have to follow specific guidelines, ride-sharing services haven’t had to adhere to the same strict regulations. Additionally, upcoming court decisions will help determine who will be held liable for ride-sharing accidents in the future.

Some ride-sharing companies provide liability insurance for their drivers in excess of their personal liability coverage. However, this doesn’t mean that drivers have insurance coverage for all of their risks.

Drivers can be dropped by their insurance company if they engage in a commercial activity on a personal auto policy. As a result, drivers need to be honest about how they intend to use their vehicles when they obtain insurance. If a driver fails to indicate the intention to drive for commercial purposes, the insurer could not only deny claims, but also drop the driver from the policy entirely. However, some insurers have created hybrid policies that allow drivers to switch between personal and commercial coverage.

If only I would have found smartphone travel tips article before my last vacation. No…Nothing like losing my smartphone would ever happen to me because I am so careful. Wrong! While I was loading the car up with take out food at Firehouse Subs. I set my smartphone and wallet on the back of the truck and forgot about it. I drove a mile back to the hotel and realized I did not have my phone or wallet. I looked and it was not on the back of the truck. I hopped back into the truck and retraced my route back to the restuarant. I even went into the Firehouse Subs to speak to the manager and the manager came outside and helped me look. That was very kind of her. We did not see it. All I could think about was the cash, credit cards and personal info on my cellphone were going to be used. I drove back to the hotel and pulled into the parking lot and there in the middle of the parking lot was my wallet, smartphone and cash spread out over about 15 feet. I couldn’t believe it! It was probably laying there for about 30 minutes and nobody touched it! What a relief. I called the Firehouse Subs to let the manager know I found it. She was still out in the parking lot looking for my phone and wallet! I wish I could remember her name. This incident happened on Saturday August 5, 2017 in Pineville, NC. I hope the manager can see this and I would like to know her name so I can thank her.

Whether you’re an experienced rider or just getting started, the right protective gear will help you have enjoyable and, most importantly, safe journeys. Even if you’re riding just a short distance, the fact that motorcycles don’t offer the same protections as other vehicles means that you need to take great care when you hit the road.

Keep your head

Perhaps the most important piece of safety equipment for proper motorcycle safety gear — other than a well-maintained bike — is your helmet. Not only does a helmet protect your head in the event of a crash, the visors and face shields provide additional safety benefits along with a more enjoyable ride. You don’t really want to get hit in the face with a pebble or a bug on Hwy 9, do you? Full-face helmets also cut down on wind noise and can help reduce rider fatigue.

Always make sure your helmet has a secure fit and that any face-protection options you select allow you to easily see what’s around you.

It may be tempting to feel the wind in your hair as you ride along Hwy 9, but wearing a helmet should be a no-brainer when you consider the safety benefits.

Your feet and hands

Boots protect your feet and ankles from injury not only in a crash but also during the ride by providing a barrier against road debris and hot exhaust pipes. The right boot soles (oil-resistant, rubber-based composite) will help you keep your feet where they need to be — on the pegs.

And remember to protect your fingers! Gloves improve your grip and prevent abrasions and blisters. Just be sure that they fit properly so you can still work the controls of your bike.

The rest of your body

When it comes to clothing to wear while riding your bike, there are options for every style choice. Look for proper motorcycle safety gear protective gear designed specifically for motorcyclists – it will offer you the best protection while still allowing you to comfortably operate your bike.

There’s a reason many riders wear leather. It is extremely durable and protects against abrasions. Newer fabrics, however, also provide these benefits. Look for reflective strips or other features designed to help make you more visible to other drivers, or add your own reflective strips if needed.

If it’s windy, you’ll want to wear layers to help keep the wind from your body. If you ride in inclement weather, don a rain suit or other gear designed specifically for those times when the road ahead isn’t quite sunny. You can even look for clothing that features electric heat, which can make your journey a lot more comfortable.
